Bernard Sanders is a U.S. Senator and former Representative from Vermont, born in Brooklyn in 1941. After graduating from the University of Chicago, he worked as a carpenter and journalist, served as Burlington's mayor, and ran for various political offices. He was elected to Congress in 1990 and the Senate in 2006, subsequently winning reelection multiple times and chairing several important congressional committees.
